Seminar on Satellites role in supporting UAV Operations 05/12/2007 05/12/2007 London, UK

What Role can Satellites Play in Supporting UAV Operations?

As the use of Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV’s) is growing significantly, in war zones, a common requirement for users is the need to get high data rate from these platforms in theatres with reach back to multiple parties, including back to command HQ. This will undoubtedly place a demand on satellite communications as a potential solution to achieve this goal. There is a growing interest in UK and Europe especially in the defence sector for the implementation of this technology. The importance of such architecture can also be seen in NATO’s implementation of a programme called Alliance Ground Surveillance which will provide situational awareness.

In addition there is a growing recognition that UAV’s have a role to play in assisting governments in meeting their national security requirements. For example, it is envisaged that UAV’s could be used in protecting borders, as presently, they cannot be used in civil airspace, which prevents them from providing a civil security role. However, should this change; there will be an increasing demand for satellite communications to support UAV operations.

This exciting seminar will focus on the key issues related to the role Satellite Communications play in supporting UAV operations; it will also provide the right forum to debate security measures and areas of improvement. It will analyse operational challenges for urban combat communications and timeliness of information and the current regulatory policies on the use of UAV’s in civil airspace.

Detailed Scope:
