Course on System Based Approach to Data Converter Design 22/10/2007 24/10/2007 Barcelona, Spain

COURSE CONTENT

This course will provide a basic understanding of the driving forces and a detailed insight into the design of A-to-D and D-to-A converters. It exemplary discusses wireless communications systems to show a system-based approach to ADC and DAC design. This will explain some of the complexity and degrees of freedom and tradeoffs in system design, e.g between RF, analog, data converters, and digital blocks. As a starting point, basic definitions and error mechanisms of data converters will be explained. We will then describe functional principles, properties, and performance limits of numerous ADC and DAC concepts and show implementation examples. Sigma-Delta Converters, as the workhorse of communication ICs, will get extensive treatment. MATLAB-models of Sigma-Delta-Converters from Schreier's wellknown toolbox will be discussed. Quantization in the time-domain, e.g. in Class D amplifiers, will be explained. Figures of merit will be derived to allow comparison and evaluation of different converters. Finally, numerous tables and diagrams will enable the participants to select the best converter type for a given application. Without pre- and post-filter, references, and biasing, the system is not complete. Basics of filter and reference design will be presented. Layout for matching and low crosstalk conclude this part.
