Location Technologies

Satellite position location and tracking using GPS is a well proven and commercially successful technology. Low cost GPS navigation devices are now widely available and the incorporation of GPS in cellular handsets looks set to become widespread. The availability of assisted GPS means that personal location within built-up urban environments, or even inside buildings, is now a possibility.

Galileo, the European satellite navigation system, is now scheduled to commence operation in 2010, and claims to offer greater precision, improved coverage at higher latitudes and a system that Europe can rely upon in times of war or political crises. Significant engineering and development activity on Galileo-based navigation systems is underway at the European Space Agency (ESA) and elsewhere.

In addition to the worldwide location technology offered by satellite-based location systems, short range location and asset tracking technologies are also being developed.

Technologies such as UltraWideband (UWB) and Radio Frequency Identiftication (RFID) can be used to provide high-accuracy short-range location services, and operational systems have been deployed.

Attendance at this one-day seminar will provide both a technical and commercial insight into the latest location technology developments.

Topics will include

• Radio location technologies including satellite location
• Cellular handset location
• Short-range location techniques such as UWB or RFID.
